Formerly known as the Maritime Academy of Maldives, the Island Institute of Tertiary Education (IITE) was founded in Male’ in 2010 and officially opened by President Mohamed Nasheed on December 6, 2011. With over 45 MQA-approved programs ranging from MNQF Level I certificates to Level VI associate degrees, IITE has three schools: Maritime (2010), Business (2017), and TVET (2022). It has graduated over 12,000 students in academic, vocational, and maritime programs. Supported by two successful MQA Institutional Audits, the most recent in 2024, the institute is ISO 9001:2015 certified by Bureau Veritas Lanka, has ABMA Education (UK) approved center status, is registered by MNSDA as a National Trade Testing Center, certified by ETS as a Test Administrator, and approved by St. John Ambulance Sri Lanka as a first aid training provider. Under the direction of co-founder and CEO Capt. Adhil Rasheed, MSc, AFNI, IITE offers programs in-person, online, and through partnerships with island councils and outreach centers throughout Male’ and the atolls. Its mission is to make affordable, industry-relevant postsecondary education accessible to all Maldivians, and it is presently pursuing College Designation from the Ministry of Higher Education.
